Groundhog Day 2023

E. Scholz via CLEOPATRA MUSE

Groundhogs burrow in the earth below,

Herbivores, they feed on plants and such.

Hibernation is their winter show,

A slumber long, that starts with much.

But come the day of Feb the second,

We search for shadows, cast by these beasts.

Phil in Punxsutawney, always second,

To Willie in Canada, at least.

From coast to coast, they roam and thrive,

Their burrow systems long and deep.

Solitude they often keep alive,

But mating brings a momentary leap.

Their lives span six years, at most, it’s true,

In gardens, fields, and earth, they grew.

So let us celebrate this burrow-dwelling mouse,

And enjoy the weather it doth arouse!
